root canal therapy

Once upon a time, root canal therapy was a source of apprehension and anxiety. Though some of these preconceived notions persist, advancements in dental technology and treatment techniques have transformed root canal therapy into a precise and virtually painless process and are reshaping outdated and unjust narratives.

Today, we’re discussing what exactly root canal therapy is, when it’s necessary, and its benefits to patients!

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy refers to a dental procedure in which damaged or decayed nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue within a tooth, collectively known as the “pulp,” are removed. By removing the damaged pulp, a dentist stops further decay in the tooth, relieves the patient’s (often rather severe) pain, and usually saves a portion of the natural tooth.

When Is a Root Canal Necessary?

Root canal therapy becomes necessary when bacteria enter a tooth through a crack or an untreated cavity and goes untreated. This festering bacteria can result in “pulpitis,” a condition in which the tooth’s pulp becomes inflamed and infected. Symptoms of pulpitis include painful toothache, heightened sensitivity to hot or cold, and jaw pain. If neglected, pulpitis can lead to an abscess (collection of pus) in the infected area, which can result in tooth loss.

Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy offers several benefits to oral and overall health.

First, root canal therapy relieves pain, which can be severe and unrelenting. Secondly, a root canal saves a portion of the patient’s natural tooth which is very helpful in maintaining proper and natural biting and chewing functions, preventing misalignment among other teeth, and maintaining the smile aesthetics.

Also, root canals eliminate infection and help to prevent further complications like infections that can spread to the jawbone and other areas of the body.

Finally, root canal therapy offers a long-term solution! With meticulous post-procedure care and proper dental crown placement, a patient can enjoy the benefits of root canal therapy for well over a decade!
